Greg Halman, who had been with the team since 2004, died from stab wounds on Monday.
Seattle Mariners outfielder Greg Halman was killed in Rotterdam on Monday, and his brother has been taken in for questioning, according to reports.
Rotterdam Police spokeswoman Patricia Wessels told The AP that police were called to a home in the Dutch port city on Monday morning and found Halman, 24, bleeding from a stab wound. The officers were unable to resuscitate him.
Halman’s 22-year-old brother was arrested for questioning, Wessels told The AP. His name has not been released and no charges have been filed at this time.
Halman, a Dutch native, had reportedly been conducting baseball clinics in his home country during the off season.
“The Mariners family is deeply saddened by the tragic death of Greg Halman,” said a statement from Mariners Chairman Howard Lincoln, President Chuck Armstrong and General Manager Jack Zduriencik on behalf of the Mariners organization. “Greg was a part of our organization since he was 16 and we saw him grow into a passionate young man and talented baseball player. He had an infectious smile that would greet you in the clubhouse, and he was a tremendous teammate. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Greg’s family.”
Halman signed with the Mariners in 2004. He was called up from the team’s minor league in September 2010. He played in 35 games in the 2011 season.
"The loss of a talented 24-year-old young man like Greg, amid such tragic circumstances, is painful for all of us throughout the game," MLB Commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement. "On behalf of Major League Baseball, I send my deepest condolences to the entire Mariners organization and to all those whose lives were touched by Greg."
