Kanye West interrupts Taylor Swift's acceptance speech after she won Best Female Video over Beyonce's "Single Ladies" vid.

(The Aftermath according to PEOPLE)

After the incident, West, who was photographed drinking what looked like liquor on the red carpet, was not in his seat at Radio City Music Hall. A security guard tells PEOPLE the rapper left the venue and would not be allowed to come back inside.

"I don't want to start anything," Swift said after the show when asked about hard feelings. "I had a great day tonight. I've been sent so many text messages and everyone's been really nice. I've had a really, really fun night."

Stars watching the show and tweeting immediately posted their thoughts on the incident. "Kanye needs to learn how to wait his turn," Zac Hanson wrote. "I am sure he will get plenty of mic time to say something stupid later in the show."

Country singer John Rich went even further with his tweet: “KanyeWest is a lowlife. He needs to have his @@@ kicked in the middle of the stage right now! What a piece of @@@@!!! Go TAYLOR SWIFT.”

Pink, who was also nominated for best female video, tweeted: “Kanye west is the biggest piece of s– on earth. Quote me.”

And Katy Perry followed suit: “F– U KANYE. IT'S LIKE U STEPPED 0N A KITTEN.”

Later, when Diddy and Jamie-Lynn Sigler took the stage to announce the best male video winner (rapper TI took it), they mentioned each of the nominees, including West, who was loudly booed by the crowd.

The show, however, got off to a more respectful start, with a heartfelt tribute to Michael Jackson in which Madonna called him, "so unique, so original, so rare. He was a king." And, she added, he's got a loyal following of royal subjects.

"My sons, age 9 and 4, are obsessed with [him]. There's a whole lot of crotch-grabbing and moonwalking going on in my house."

After her speech, Janet took the stage at the end of a Michael Jackson medley. Performing in front of the brother and sister's "Scream" video, Janet channeled her late brother's dance moves.

UPDATE: KANYE APOLOGIZES TO TAYLOR SWIFT!

Kanye West is "SOOOOO SORRY" for interrupting Taylor Swift at Sunday’s Video Music Awards. The rapper posted an apology on his Web site’s blog after the show in his usual style of all caps.

"I'm in the wrong for going on stage and taking away from her moment," he wrote. "Beyonce's video was the best of this decade . . . I'm sorry to my fans if I let you guys down . . . I'm sorry to my friends at MTV . . . I will apologize to Taylor."

UPDATE: TAYLOR SWIFT'S MOM WENT OFF ON KANYE WEST BACKSTAGE AT VMAs!

Minutes after Kanye West stormed the stage as she accepted her Video Music Award, a teary-eyed Taylor Swift pulled herself together to perform her award-winning song, "You Belong With Me," atop a cab parked in front of Radio City Music Hall.

But West only continued the drama by angering the entire Swift family. After Swift's mother, Andrea, asked to speak to the rapper and, a source tells PEOPLE, "tore into him," the rapper continued to maintain that Beyoncé's "Single Ladies" should have won Best Female Video instead and made no formal apology.

Later on his Web site, West confirmed that Swift's mother "said the same thing my mother would have said," but didn't offer a full apology until Monday afternoon, when he said, "That was Taylor's moment and I had no right in any way to take it from her. I am truly sorry."

Among those who did offer support backstage was Beyoncé's dad, Matthew, who comforted Taylor and her family, and arranged the moment in which Beyoncé gave Swift a second chance at the spotlight.

A spokeswoman for Taylor says she's been overwhelmed by her fellow musicians' "kindness, support and generosity."

Class Act - Beyonce gave her time after winning the Best Video Of The Year Award to Taylor Swift, so Taylor could have her moment and give her acceptance speech.

Jay Z f/ Alicia Keys perform "Empire State Of Mind"

UPDATE: WTF Moment: Lil Mama creeps on stage during Jay Z & Alicia Keys Performance!

According to EW:

The incident promptly became a trending topic last night on Twitter. Shout out to tweet-happy rapper Fabolous for making the #lilmamais hashtag happen. “#lilmamais JayZ’s hypeman, she jus got there late,” joked Fab. “#lilmamais the bird that flew outta Lady Gaga’s nest on her face!!” And so on. But all the hi-larious Twitter punchlines in the world got us no closer to what we all really want to know: What on earth was Lil Mama doing on stage at that moment?!

We’ve reached out to Lil Mama and Jay-Z’s camps to see if they can clarify just what happened there. (UPDATE: A representative for Jay-Z tells EW she has “No clue how it happened.”) In the meantime, watch the encounter again. You may LOL when you see Jay-Z’s understated yet surprised-seeming body language.

UPDATE: Lil Mama Issues A Response:

On Monday afternoon (September 14), her manager released a statement to MTV News, explaining her intentions.

"I did not mean any disrespect towards Jay-Z or Alicia Keys," the statement read. "I admire them and look up to them as role models. 'Empire State of Mind' had my emotions running high. In that moment I came up onstage to celebrate my two icons singing about NY."

Her decision helped her become a trending topic on Twitter for the hash mark "#LilMamaIs", where several people went in on the young artist for hours following the ceremony.
